Serving the Purpose of God as a Body
2 Corinthians 5:9-10 (NCV)
"9 Our only goal is to please God whether we live here or there, 10 because we must all stand before Christ to be judged. Each of us will receive what we should get—good or bad—for the things we did in the earthly body."
Many church members sometimes get the mistaken idea that service to God must be an "up front" kind of activity. To their way of thinking, the preacher and the worship leader serve God, but the rest of us are just trying to get through the day--and maybe in the future we will get a chance to do some great thing for the Lord.
The truth is that much of our daily life is spent serving God's purpose. In fact, our greatest impact might come out of a small act of faithfulness. When I was a young teen growing up, the time I spent with my father outside of his ministry, seemed to have very little eternal significance. Walking, talking or doing something with him seemed to be ordinary activities. . But the spiritual principles he implied and shared with me made an impact that molded my life. I have used them in almost every facet of my life and ministry. I saw that my father have influenced many people.
God's followers should not underestimate the scope of ministry. If we limit our service to special "church tasks," we will miss everyday opportunities to make a difference. The Scriptures are full of ordinary but necessary things for believers to do like caring for the less fortunate (Ex. 22:22); training children (Prov. 22:6); using Christian liberty wisely (1 Cor. 8:7-13); "admonishing the unruly, encouraging the fainthearted, helping the weak" (1 Thess. 5:14); and many more. These seemingly small acts are bricks that build us up as a church family.
Believers make up Jesus' body on earth. We are His hands to reach out, His feet to go where the need is, and His mouth to give comfort and share the gospel. What role are you meant to fulfill today? Prayerfully commit to serve the Lord in everything you do.
I encourage all of us to start with our family at home and church. Let me share with you a song written by a pastor who shares this burden also:
"If We Are The Body"
It's crowded in worship today
As she slips in trying to fade into the faces
The girl's teasing laughter is carrying farther than they know
Farther than they know
Chorus
But if we are the body
Why aren't His arms reaching?
Why aren't His hands healing?
Why aren't His words teaching?
And if we are the body
Why aren't His feet going?
Why is His love not showing them there is a way?
There is a way
A traveler is far away from home
He sheds his coat and quietly sinks into the back row
The weight of their judgemental glances
Tells him that his chances are better out on the road
Jesus paid much too high a price
For us to pick and choose who should come
And we are the body of Christ
Jesus is the way.
