Typhoon Ondoy caused so much pain and sufferings for millions of Filipinos affected by the record breaking amount of rains, massive flooding in Metro-Manila and surrounding provinces last Sept 25-26, 2009. It resulted to the tragic loss of 277 lives. It also brought out compassion and generosity from private and public sectors, and learning privilege for our church to exercise the love of God. Last Sunday, we announce the call for volunteers and donations and the deacons appropriated seed money for relief operations.

Last Tuesday-Thursday, about 30 volunteers packed donations including eggs and bread, noodles, canned goods, bottled water, candles and matches, clothing and blankets, rice and slippers. Last Tuesday, a team visited the flooded area to assess the situation in the morning, while the rest were packing. In the afternoon til midnight, we distributed relief goods to 30 of our members affected by the flood in Cainta and Pasig areas and for 25 families from our daughter church in Pasig. Encouragingly more donations came Wednesday from members, two companies, a Chinese church and some churches in Classis Metro-Manila North, which made volunteers busier packing the whole day. From mid-afternoon until 9pm, five teams were dispatched and visited 62 individual families from Pasig City, Mandaluyong City, Cainta City, Makati City, Antipolo City, San Juan City, Taytay and San Mateo. Another team delivered goods for 75 families connected with Bread-Marikina under Pastor Rodel Catuy. A third team brought relief goods to specific families and brought an old bed-ridden mother using a plastic raft to a hospital.
Last Thursday, although unpassable, we delivered relief goods for 50 families by boat in Kalawaan, Pasig and gave additional packs for 25 families around P. Amid’s church. Two teams ministered to 20 identified families in Cainta, Marikina, Pasig, Mandaluyong and Taguig areas. There were moving stories of gratitude to God and appreciation for the care given by the church. Our volunteers, though feeling tired, felt enriched by the privilege to extend the compassion of Christ to others.
