Rev. Ben Gomez:
In Pursuit of Excellence
by Jossette Santos

Robert Blake and Jane Mouton are prominent management theorists who conceptualized the managerial grid where concern for people and concern for production were emphasized. In their framework, they talked about five management styles: country club management, team management, organization management, impoverished management and authority obedience management.

Listening to Reverend Ben narrate his secular business background and his ministerial work as former deacon and chairman of the council, one could perceive that he is a skilled manager. He is strong in country club management focusing on people’s needs. There was even a time Reverend Ben held regular “eating-parties” among the church’s consisting to build a more relaxed but solid working team. Reverend Ben’s idea has improved both the team’s relationship and their work output. He advocates team management.

Reverend Ben is the epitome of a Christian manager in ministry at its best. In an article “What do managers do. . . really,” the description’s of a manager perfectly fit him. He is the following: “figurehead, leader, liaison, monitor, spokesman, disseminator, entrepreneur, disturbance handler, resource allocator and negotiator.”

But most importantly, Reverend Ben is God’s excellent manager with God’s spirit guiding him and God’s heartbeat motivating him.

(Rev. Bienvenido A. Gomez is married to the prayerful Sis. Esperanza Gomez. They are blessed with two children, Cocoy and Vannie.)
